right now lost at sea. a desperate search is underway for two missing fishermen. stuck on highway 101. investigators shut down the freeway after someone opened fire on a car in the middle of the afternoon on that busy freeway. record-breaking heat tonight. it may have led to the death of an elderly woman in the east bay. good evening. a frantic search is underway for two missing boaters from san francisco. their fishing boat capsized a mile off shore. monty francis is near highway 1 in san mateo county with the

latest for us. >> reporter: good evening. we spoke to the family of one of the missing boaters and they are hoping and praying he will turn up alive. it has been 12 hours since the boat capsized and the search is underway still tonight. family members shouted the names of the missing clinging to hope their loved ones would return safe. among them the wife of one of the men from san francisco. he shared her anguish. >> i want my husband to come back. we are waiting for you. >> tang who has a 7-year-old daughter left this morning from san francisco with three friends for a fishing trip. hours later, one mile off shore from the pichblgen point light house a large wave hit their 23-foot boat and it capsized. two of the men had life vests

and swam to shore not far from where their boat ended up on the rocks. the other two, including tang, did not have life jackets and are still lost at sea. tang's sister says the four friends are all experienced boaters. >> he knows how to swim. >> the coast guard spent the evening searching an area of 40 square miles by helicopter and sea. the san mateo county sheriffs department searched up and down the coast on beaches and bluffs. >> if you are that far out it is pretty dangerous. it is -- hopefully they had something to hold on to. some sort of debris. >> justin is a surfer familiar with the conditions here. he said the biggest danger for the two missing men is the temperature of the warm. >> it warmed up this year. off shore 55 degrees which is very cold in the water when you have winds howling like this. >> the two men who swam ashore are being treated at kaiser an

stanford hospitals. they are okay except for hypothermia. the coast guard has a plane and helicopter searching right now. we're told that a coast guard cutter will be on the water throughout the night. live in san mateo county, nbc bay area news. people on highway 101 on the peninsula had quite the scare when someone opened fire on a car 3:30 this afternoon. the chp shut down the road for several hours during the investigation and that caused a massive traffic backup. kimberly tere is in san carlos with the latest for us. >> reporter: 101 south near the hillsdale exit looked reich a parking lot today. some cars even made u-turns on the freeway, heading against traffic, to try to get out of the jam. the cause of the backup a shooting on 101 that ended in a car crash just after 3:30 this

afternoon. >> a red 2009 dodge charger, southbound 101 and somewhere between highway 92 and san matteau an the holly street exit here in san carlos another vehicle came alongside and began to shoot at the charger. >> reporter: police say the driver of the dodge charger drove off the side of the road crashing in to a fence and they found the two men and women inside. all three were take on the the hospital. police are not releasing nuch information on the victims but they said investigators have been sent to speak to them. >> right now we have the charger with multiple bullet holes in it and injured occupants. we don't know much more than that at this time. we don't know fit was an exchange of gun fire. we don't know if it was only directed at the charger. we're trying to piece it together. >> the crime scene stretched more than 3 1/2 miles on 101. police say the majority of the gun fire happened in belmont. right now, police say their priority is getting information about the other vehicle and people involved.

>> we're actively investigating the case. if anyone saw the shooting, anything leading up to the shooting or anything after the shooting, including the crash, we'd appreciate any information we could get. >> again, that was kimberly tere reporting for us. police are investigating another killing in san jose tonight. officers found a man suffering from stab wounds at 1:00 this morning. he later died. police are not releasing the victim's name or age. san jose has had 39 homicides last year which was a 15-year high. today's killing brings the total this year to 34. with three months left to go in 2012, this year's total could surpass last year nmpbl the east bay, a man is behind bars tonight accused of stabbing another man with an ice pick. it happened 1:00 this morning inside of within of the apartments in this complex in san leandro. police arrived and found the victim a 57-year-old man suffering from stab wounds. they arrested 38-year-old

michael hillburn after a short car chase. it is not clear what led up to the attack. the victim is expected to survive. new at 11:00, police believe the heat played a role of a death of an elderly woman in concord. the 86-year-old wandered off from her assisted living home this afternoon when temperatures were 100 degrees outside. after an extensive search, they found her body at fair oaks elementary school. police and health officials are urging people to stay indoors and cool during the heat wave. the woman who died suffered from dementia and mild alzheimer's, as well. the hot weather is not letting up yet. check in with rob on the heat. >> today we saw the temperatures close to 100 degrees around livermore and concord. tomorrow likely going to see a hotter day in the bay area. numbers 80s. san francisco to oakland. livermore 100. 97 santa rosa and the other issue is the air quality. if you have asthma or suffer

it is part of the pipeline safety program and crews will try to control the odor and the noise. starting tomorrow, getting a bag at just about any store in san francisco will cost you. the expansion of the city's plastic bag ban goes in to affect tomorrow. in 2007, san francisco passed a law prohibiting grocery stores and chain pharmacies from using plastic bags. this new law bans the standard plastic bag from all retailers and it requires businesses to charge customers 10 cents for any other type of bag they give out. restaurants are exempt, but only for the next year. the a's continue to thrill this season. they are one game closer to the playoffs after beating the mariners today. fans went crazy with this go-ahead homer in this eighth inning. there it goes. very nice. it has been six years since the team has been to post-season play. some fans are talking destiny. >> really exciting.

that's not entirely true. average tax rates were slight lower in 1 '64, '63 and 2004. and mitt romney said college costs have risen 25% under the democrats that is not entirely true. college tuition for two year ands sup 23% but according to the education department when adjusted for inflation tuition is up 7 to 8% overall. criminals who were sentenced to prison for life in california when they were juveniles could get a second chance thanks to a bill signed by governor brown today. more than 300 inmates are serving life without parole for murders they committed as teenagers. brown says the bill would allow inmates to ask judges to reconsider their sentences after they serve at least 15 years. judges could then reduce the no-parole sentence to 25 years to life if the inmate shows

remorse and is taking steps toward rehabilitation. arnold schwarzenegger's revealing some long-held secrets in his new autobiography. the book is called "total recall, my unbelievably true life story" and it comes out tomorrow. the associated press bought a copy and said not only did he keep secret that he feared a child with the housekeeper but his decision to run for governor. he traces his detachment back to his body building days when he wb quote became an expert in living in denial. arnold schwarzenegger's filed for divorce in july. we have new information tonight on the shutdown of the 405 in los angeles. traffic nightmare it was not. the mayor of los angeles was calling it carmegeddon two. today he called it a success. >> we are on track.

thank you los angeles! once again, the ten-mile closure of the nation's busiest highway was a resounding success. >> similar to last year, many people stayed off the roads and the weekend traffic was light. the freeway is set to reopen on time tomorrow morning at 5:00. there were two winning lotto tickets in this weekend's $28 million super lotto jackpot drawing. one of the winning tickets was sold at the ocean supermarket. the owner of the market gets $70,000 for selling the ticket. >> fortunate enough to have $14 million winner here at the ocean supermarket. we are very pleased with that. >> this is the first winner they have ever had. >> each of the winning tickets is worth about $10 million when you transfer it in to cash. rob is here right now with a check on the forecast for us. it was hot today and it is going to get hotter? >> the thing tomorrow is we will start off even warmer than today. it is like a running start.

in fact you will probably be surprised by how warm it is outside right now. as we show you san francisco, completely cloud free. the flag out there is not moving. that really tells the story. you don't have toe fog, no ocean air conditioning and the temperatures inland slowly cooling down. you can see the numbers in the bay area right now out to the inland valleys, which we are seeing. the temperatures are in the 70s out by livermore and concord. some of the hills in the east bay, i have been checking the observation sites some of the 70s in the sites right now. if the ac is going all night, that is why. some of the heat is trapped inland. the air conditioning is broken in the bay area. you are not seeing a west wind in livermore. a hibt of a breeze in fairfield right now and similar wind conditions tomorrow which unfortunately means that without the wind to stir up some of the air pollution during the day tomorrow another spare the air day. i think this is the fourth in a row and some of the worst air

quality to the tri valley and santa clara valley south. the same locations tomorrow seeing the hottest temperatures in the bay area. tomorrow just livermore had 100 degrees. tomorrow i think it will be an even spread of 9 0s to just above 100 in the east bay. a little cooler for the inner bay on tuesday. significant cooling on wednesday, thursday and in to friday. the satellite view is interesting. this looks like summer. a monster ridge of high pressure. monster flow up and down the west coast. the sinking warm air aloft is like a hair drier. warms things up during the day. the hills tomorrow warming to the 60s and 70s. look at the temperatures. the marine layer squished to the coast. widespread 90s to maybe as hot as 105 in the hottest places. 95 san jose. that's up from the 90 we saw today. upper 90s south toward with morgan hill and gilroy.

the numbers in the try trivalley. 100 degree temperatures in concord and walnut creek. and 80s in the bay. san francisco 70s on the coast. head down highway 1. as you go down the coast you will see the 70s, near 9 0 tomorrow in santa cruz. the good news, tomorrow is the hottest day. minor relief inland on tuesday. then the ocean air conditioning turns on. wednesday in to thursday and then next weekend could be interesting. this is a seven-day forecast that looks like fall. we will have a roller coaster week of heat to start. cooling midweek and by next weekend 70s inland. so almost a 30-degree swing in temperatures heading to next weekend. even some showers are possible. >> that's crazy. >> it is a long ways off. least we will be cooling off. >> let's check in with henry wofford. what's happening in your world? >> i will tell you, can talk for hours about the sports world.

a 19-year-old man is recovering after a fall from a water park in california. the accident happened this

afternoon at six flags amusement park. authorities say the man cut in line, raced past lifeguards and jumped on to the slide head first. witnesses say he fell to the ground half way down. people are supposed to go down feet first. authorities did not release the extent of his injuries. two guns that once belonged to bonny and clyde fetched more than a half million dollars at an auction in new hampshire today. the notorious gangsters had the guns when they were killed in a hail of gun fire in 19 34. the weapons were apparently recovered from the couple's car. among the other things on the auction block today, a document signed by al capone and an i.d. card belonging to elliott ness. nasa's oryne spacecraft is another step closer to outer space. this is them testing it in 2010. it is supposed to usher in new era of exploration. nasa just completed a different test.

we are getting a closer look at an architectural center. nbc bay area shows what they could hold for the earthquake standards. >> reporter: a stroll around san francisco's civic center will reveal plenty of history from statues to the art building. but it took shoveling to reveal the history beneath everyone's feet. >> we found these when crews started to work for landscaping that had been planned for the

area. >> reporter: last week crews rehabbing the building hit a patch of bricks. turns out they were remnants of the city's early years. >> what we have here are the remaining foundation for old city hall, which was destroyed in the quake and fire of 1906. >> reporter: the devastating quake left the 9-year-old city hall in ruins. archaeologist rebecca carver believes the newly discovered foundations belong to one of the few part of city hall that didn't collapse. >> what we with are see hoog is the top of the foundation or the eastern most part of the san francisco's old city hall. >> reporter: construction on old city hall started in 1872, but delays and bickering stretched the work across 25 years. >> by the time it finished, it had been built in stages and there's differences in construction technique. >> because of that architectural

if the aed win or angels lose tomorrow the a's win a wild card spot. the a's have a chance, as we mentioned, to win the west if they sweep texas this week. thousands showed up in san francisco this morning to take part in the bridge to bridge run. dubbed america's most beautiful race it starts in the shadow of the bay bridge along the embarcadero and goes to the golden gate bridge. today runners had a perfect view with blue skies and a lot of sunshine. is that a picture-perfect day or what? this is the 35th anniversary of the run and benefits the special olympics. can't get enough of those shots. there were two winning tickets in the super lotto jackpot drawing one ticket was sold at the ocean supermarket. the owner of the mark gets $70,000 for selling that winning ticket.
